Chickens off the grid!

My camera isn't the best, but you may be barely able to make out the string of Christmas lights over our hen house. My husband is especially proud, as he has them hooked up to the solar panel on top (which runs the light bulb inside for winter light).
So our girls not only have Christmas Spirit, but are off the grid as well!

  1. Hello!
What a wonderful idea...to have Christmas lights on the chicken coop. Happy Chickens make lots of eggs ;) You live in a beautiful part of the world...I love the Pacific Northwest. Isn't it wonderful to be living in the country...I would never want to go back to 'civilization' if I could help it. You have a beautiful home...I LOVE all the windows. I know what you mean about thinking you want more animals but then aren't sure about it...we feel the same way. After seeing the video of the goats on my blog I REALLY would love to have goats but our fences aren't good enough for that yet plus we'd have to put more up and right now we've got too many other things on the go here on the farm. That's what happens when you buy an old rundown farm. Thank you for becoming a follower...I hope you enjoy your time here. I look forward to seeing your next post! Best wishes for 2011.
    Maura :)

as a man with a year-old chicken coup and about 150 feet of extension cord for my heat lamp set up, i would love to know what combination of products your husband used to rig a solar-powered heat bulb!

  3. I am sorry to have misled you! David say we only have the solar panel for the light bulb, not the heat lamp. He got the solar panel at Harbor Freight,a kit with a 35 watt panel, inverter and light bulb. We also run the 150 feet of extension cord out there for a heat lamp if needed.:) But it doesn't get cold enough here for the heat lamp usually. We only use it on the Baby Girls,in the garage until they are big enough to go down to the Hen house.
